Mandatory Supervisor Training

To better prepare employees to fulfill compliance obligations, a comprehensive harassment and discrimination prevention training program is required for all UC employees. UC Merced supervisors and academic appointees are required to take a two-hour education course every two years. Those required to take the course may satisfy the requirement online. Course links will be sent directly to the employee via email.

For information on the training requirement for all employees, view the UC Policy on Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is required to take a supervisory education course?

All supervisors, including all employees with HEERA designations, or employees who may meet the following criteria:

“Any individual having the authority, and the interest of the employer, to hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward or discipline other employees, or the responsibility to direct them, or to adjust their grievances, or effectively to recommend that action, if, in connection with the foregoing, the exercise of that authority is not merely of a routine or clerical nature, but requires the use of independent judgment.”

At UC Merced, the following groups of employees are included:

  • All SMG (Senior Management Group)
  • All MSP (Management and Senior Professional)
  • All staff supervisors (employees with HEERA code designations)
  • All staff work leaders (Add the “S” code in the “Special Training Required” for the position in UCPath)
  • All faculty
  • Most academic appointees
  • Employees with at least one (1) direct report

An employee who does not strictly meet the definition above is free to take the required training. The fact that an employee is required by UC Merced to take the training, or takes the training voluntarily, does not mean the person is a “supervisor” under any law.

What are the deadlines for satisfying the supervisory education requirement?

UC Merced supervisors and academic appointees are required to take a two-hour education course every two years.

New supervisors or academic appointees have 60 days to satisfy the requirement.

Continuing employees will receive an email notification 60 days before the two-year anniversary of their previous compliance.

Where do I sign up for a course or access the online program?

You can access the UC Learning Center. Once you have accessed the UC Learning Center with your single sign-on, you can find the online program by entering SHP into the search box. You can sign up for an instructor-led course by entering SHPILT into the search box.

Why can't I find a link to the two-hour online course?

If you have not received a training assignment email notification, there are several possible reasons:

    • You have already satisfied the requirement.
    • You are not required to satisfy the requirement.
    • You are registered with your official UC Merced email account, which you do not check, or you are registered without an email address.
    • You are registered, and your spam blocker is blocking the email reminders from HR training.
    • There is an error in the way your information has been entered in the Payroll Personnel System that needs to be corrected.

What should I do if I’m having technical difficulties with the course?

If you have any issues locating the training or accessing your UC Learning Center account, please contact the UC Merced Service Desk via phone, chat, ticket, or in person.
